The ventao manual “The SDGs in weltwärts – weltwärts in the SDG’s” for the educational support of weltwärts volunteers is finished! In five different modules, the manual deals with the relationships between the SDGs and the weltwärts volunteer service and can be used to accompany North-South and South-North volunteers. Volunteers are encouraged to deal explicitly with the SDG‘S and to reflect on their own weltwärts volunteer service in this context.
The project “The SDGs in weltwärts – weltwärts in the SDGs” can be seen as a contribution by ventao to promote the exchange between practitioners in the weltwärts context on the topic of “Sustainable Development Goals”. To this end, an international team of four experts worked on the creation of the method manual in 2020.
The methods shed light on different areas:
- an introduction to the SDGs and connections to the weltwärts voluntary service,
- in the field of biosphere, aspects of climate change and climate justice as part of the weltwärts volunteer service,
- in the field of society, an in-depth discussion of the SDGs in general and SDG 1 No Poverty, SDG 4 Qualitative Education and SDG 5 Gender Justice
- in the field of economics, a reflection on poverty / wealth,
- in the field of partnerships, reflection on the understanding of coloniality, power relations and (advocating for) justice.
The creation of the methods was preceded by a lively exchange with weltwärts practitioners from countries in the so-called Global South and from Germany in order to identify gaps in the educational accompaniment or in materials in the area of SDGs and develop concrete ideas for methods.
The manual with the method descriptions was developed in English and translated into German, Spanish and French. It is available for download here. In addition to the manual, materials are available for carrying out the various methods.
A collection of literature on SDGs and power-critical perspectives is also available for downloading to deepen the topics. The document is in English but contains links to literature in English, German and Spanish. ENGLISH: Recommended readings on SDGs
On this project page you can also find a glossary on power-critical approaches and terms, which was created in the course of the project. Dr. Malathi Kattampatti Santhanam, who was part of the international team, also provides an overview of the weltwärts volunteer service cycle and the integration of the SDGs on an educational level. As part of the ventao project, an exemplary curriculum for a multiplier seminar was also developed (only in German). This offers a procedure how the manual can be introduced and brought closer to multipliers.
